Tallships 2011
Did you know that Richmond is preparing to host the ASTA (American Sail Training Association) tall ship gathering again in 2011.
The 2002 event was a resounding success and people are still talking about it.
This aerial shot captures the action as two sailing vessels engage in a mock battle in Steveston Harbour with a crowd of thousands looking on in fascination. Some 400,000 people descended upon Steveston to be part of Tallships Festival.
Organisation is already underway to have the fleet call once again in 2011 at Steveston. It is a fitting venue for this venerable armada. Steveston was a deep water port at the turn of the 20th century with full 50 feet of water at low tide alomgside the warfs. Cargo ships, clippers, barks, schooners and the like took on cargoes of canned salmon bound for England and the European continent.
